Description

I went... kind of ref crazy. But anywho, I decided after Coloring Medium, I wanted to buck up and try again. Plus, the opportunity for four months of time to work on the audition... too good to pass up. Lost and Found is way too cool.

Ahem:

Name: Substance 88

Alias /Nickname: Ates

Age: 19

Gender: Male (Mentally, but there are technically no tidbits to define him as such.)

Species: Android

What Was Stolen: The material off both his arms.

Abilities:

1. Substance 88, his namesake and what powers him, has some scientific bases (when exposed to oxygen, it essentially rusts into useless green goop, and it is made from various chemicals), but it also has some, for lack of a better term, magic properties that allow it to give personality to things of the nonliving variety. Say for instance the metal remote control bot Ates originally was; S-88 gives it the personality and the will to move. It drips from his wounds and is slightly acidic to organic materials, but oxidizes into a greenish paste too quickly to do serious damage.
2. He carries an airtight steel container of S-88 in his knapsack, but it’s a very limited supply that can't be replenished.

Physical Strengths:

• Crazy strong arms, capable of breaking holes through solid walls.
• Intelligent, although more in the ‘good at catching on to things’ or genre savvy way than the ‘inventing and coming up with plans that make sense’ way.
• Chemical substance that powers him is acidic when not oxidized.

Physical Weaknesses:

• If his arms aren’t coated in S-88 approximately every 6 hours, they lose movement completely. (This is gradual, though; in 1 hour, they’ll start getting stiff, at the 3 hour mark fine motor skills are gone, and around 5 he barely has any control over them.)
• Because his insides are exposed at the shoulder joints, his innards are slowly oxidizing. As more and more of his S-88 is being converted into this useless sludge, that kind of clogs up his system. When he's coughing or throwing it up, it's because his system is trying to rid itself of the clogging and make room for more S-88... which he can't provide because he doesn't have it. See the Others section for more details on the progression.
• If his core (located in the center of his chest) is exposed to open air, he’s got two minutes to try and patch it up anyway possible; otherwise, he’s powered down.
• Heavy hits disrupt the wiring of his frame, causing malfunctions or complete shutdowns in whatever limbs affected.

Height/Weight: About 4’ 7” and weighing approximately 250 pounds. Most of the weight is in his arms.

Personality: Ates is easily irritated and, as of getting his arms ripped off, constantly aggravated. He’s prone to flying off into rants at very slight things, but they’re pretty silly most of the time. The rants, that is; they’re a lot of sputtering and swearing but no real substance. Just anger. When not angry, which is pretty rare, he’s usually reading a book or trying to solve a problem and is kind of constantly bored. He’s pretty petulant, very cautious, and doesn’t usually have a lot of fun.

He holds grudges, and he holds them well. Emotions aside from anger tend to stew inside him, rarely getting let out; he bottles up his fear that he’s going to die and lies about it if asked. Any worry he might feel for another person (which is actually quite a bit if he happens to like this person; Ates doesn’t make many friends) usually gets let out with spurts of anger.

But when his rage is more potent and true, he doesn’t bother with the rants. He probably doesn’t even bother with words. He just attacks.

(Progression note; as he gets sicker and loses more S-88 to oxidation, his control over his emotions slips. The further this goes on, the more he loses of himself. Eventually his logic would fail, he might lose memories, or even his almighty anger.)

History: Made by a scientist who died when he was about ten, Ates has lived on his own and taken care of himself since then. He lives a pretty long ways from any real civilization, and when he had to visit it, for supplies or otherwise, social interactions were minimal. He has learned a lot about his make-up from studying his creator’s notes and, after getting his arms stolen, knows enough that the only way to live is if he A: manages to find an extremely rare polymer and figures out how to make S-88 so he can craft some new arms, or B: follow the map and trust that the Thief’s little note pinned to the map was true.

Likes:

• Singing (in secret. While no one is around.)
• Privacy
• Books

Dislikes: Almost everything, but especially:

• Thoughts of dying
• Air
• Pain

Other: There is a progression in the slow oxidization of his innards: At first it’s just a cough, but as time marches on, he’s hacking up nasty green sludge. Just a little. And then a little more. Later on, he starts to gag on the stuff, and the penultimate sign that time is running out is actual forcible vomit. This process can be speeded up by gaining various nicks and cuts.

He doesn’t need to breathe, eat, or sleep. Pain is relative, as it is the S-88 that allows him to feel it. Arms that haven’t been recently soaked don’t feel very much (and if one were to get ripped off, it would probably just be a sharp sensation), and nor would the oxidized S-88 around his shoulders feel much. Ripping the ‘flesh’ off of his arms, however... Man, that Thief is sadistic.

Has a fairly smooth voice.

‘Skin’ is kind of hard to rip bare-handed or with blunt force. It’s best to get something sharp and slice it.

Despite being kind of squishy (aside from his arms, at the moment), Ates is not organic at all.

Regarding his ability to close wounds: S-88 is kind of attracted to itself and if it were pressed together, given sufficient time and complete lack of Oxygen, it would bond to itself again. It takes a few weeks (or months, depending on the size and depth of the wound) and very little movement; not very practical in the middle of a fighting tourney. In other words, his wounds probably won't heal in the tourney.

Please excuse any kind of squick you might have experienced reading/looking at the picture of Ates vomiting. Not that my style is particularly graphic. XD

Hurray, first robot character in the tournament.
I dig his bright colors and design. Who could hate a robot in a bow tie? That's just classy.
